Watermark Reception and Presentation with Textile Artist Blair Treuer
Date and Time
Friday Jun 9, 2023
5:00 PM - 7:00 PM CDT
Watermark Art Center welcomes textile artist Blair Treuer and her exhibit "Becoming - the Transition from Childhood to Womanhood" with a reception and a brief presentation from Treuer at 6 p.m.
This body of work is a celebration and validation of the feminine in all its forms and in all genders. The exhibit is a fantastical story that celebrates Treuer's daughter’s journey and ceremonial right of passage into womanhood, and thus into her power.
Treuer's children’s participation in a traditional Native American ceremony required her to make blankets as a part of their spiritual offering. The process was very spiritual for her. Because it was the only way she could contribute as a non-native woman, she poured everything she had into those offerings. Being a creative person, she chose to do something other than traditional block quilts. Her first blankets pictorialIy depicted the Native American names gifted to her children when they were born. After a decade of creating blankets for private spiritual ceremonies, she transitioned to creating portraits for gallery display in 2018.
A slideshow of her work will be available online after the opening at WatermarkArtCenter.org.
